The collaboration between curator Paola Coin and designer Aldo Cibic began in 2000 when their fledgling design company, Paola C., launched a line of hand-finished ceramics and hand-blown glass. As the collection grew so did their research into materials and techniques, with metal, silver and wood joining the palette as well as a host of design collaborators who would weave new narratives into the collection.
The Stories series launched by Paola C. in 2014 is described as 'short tales by a single author’, and now includes the New Roman range by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, Table Joy by Aldo Cibic, Lunar Landscape by Elisa Ossino, Coquille by Chiara Andreatti, and Dolce Vita by Cristina Celestino.
Paola C.’s cofounder and art director, Aldo Cibic, began his design career in the Milan studio of Ettore Stottsass. Going on to join Sottsass as a founding member of the Memphis Movement, it is here that he honed his skills and interest in experimentation that underpins each Paola C collection. As its name suggests, Aldo’s Table Joy range is full of fun. Colour is bright and unapologetic, with the family of vases, bowls, cake stands and carafes in their medley of shapes and materials, bursting with life and the slightly mischievous narrative of Memphis.
For designer Cristina Celestino her work for the brand also brings with it a deep knowledge and admiration for the great 20th century masters of Italian design, and a common thread of material experimentation. Graduating from the Department of Architecture at the IUVA University of Venice, her studio Attico Design was founded in Milan in 2009. Using strong geometry and a subtle play on traditional forms, Cristina's objects convey a fresh new material language with her Dolce Vita collection celebrating the charm of Italy in the 1950s and all of its fun and optimism.
Located in a typical milanese courtyard in the centre of Milan, the Paola C. collection is exhibited against the layered beauty of the Renaissance city. Paola and Aldo’s exuberant take on ‘dressing up’ an interior grounded in traditional craftsmanship with a twist.
