According to Apple's Chief Design Officer Jonathan Ive, designers across the disciplines are losing interest in the handmade.
Opening the Manus x Machina exhibition in New York, he lamented that fewer designers appear interested in detail and how things go together, and went on to describe the important impact his father, a craftsman, has had on his own career.
"With a father who is a fabulous craftsman, I was raised with the fundamental belief that it is only when you personally work with a material with your hands, that you come to understand its true nature, its characteristics, its attributes, and I think – very importantly – its potential."
The exhibition raises interesting questions about the hand and the machine and how they can co-exist. Particularly poignant today as furniture manufacturers balance the artful handmade qualities (and imperfection) in tune with innovative technologies for production.
