One of our favourite new chairs on show at the Milan Furniture Fair this week is the East River Chair designed by Hella Jongerius for Vitra. In 2009 Jongerius was commissioned with Rem Koolhaas to remodel the North Delegates' Lounge at the United Nations headquarters in New York and the East River Chair is based on a collection of furniture developed with the Swiss furniture group. "In a lounge, which is primarily used as a neutral space for spontaneous meetings, the furnishings play an important role in creating a lively setting", says Hella Jongerius. "The most important element for facilitating conversations in a casual atmosphere is an armchair that is solidly constructed, yet also lightweight and mobile."

Colourful, playful and full of personality, the East River Chair has been carefully coordinated its distinctive form and casual combination of wood, metal, leather and fabric, displaying Jongerius's unique approach to mixing industry and craft.
