Congratulations to finalists Andrew Southwood Jones and Alexander Kashin, Kristian Aus, Ross Gardam, Tom Fereday, Bradley Mitchell, Emma Elizabeth, Christina Waterson and designers Daniel To and Emma Ashton of Daniel Emma... And the winner is... First launched in 2010 the Space Design Residency joined forces with the Dutch design house Moooi this year, a group that brings with it the creative talents and business nous of Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers. Space Furniture has collaborated closely with Moooi to design a program that will provide the best opportunities for a local Australian designer, which unlike any other program of this kind includes an opening for the designer to produce a piece for the Moooi collection.

Narrowing the initial submissions down to a short list of eight, all applications were reviewed by Marcel Wanders, Moooi Co-founder and Art Director and Casper Vissers, Moooi Co-founder and CEO, with the Sydney-based designer Tom Fereday announced on Thursday as the winner.

“We believe Tom’s handwriting / DNA is a fit with Moooi. He is not searching for ‘me too’ products, instead he wants to achieve something exciting and unexpected,” remarked Casper Vissers. "While Moooi seeks to create designs with a new approach and/or vision, they must also trigger a client on different levels: function, story, beauty, shape, materials, recognition and happiness. In essence the Moooi brand is about 'The Unexpected Welcome'."

To mark the occasion, Casper Vissers and Marcel Wanders introduce Space + Moooi 2014 Design Residency recipient Tom Fereday in the accompanying short film. and we will post our interview with Tom in the coming weeks.
