To accompany the upcoming show California Design 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way, Wendy Kaplan from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will give a lecture in Sydney presenting the California of our collective imaginationand demonstrate how this image was translated into a material culture that defined an era. Kaplan, department head of Decorative Arts and Design at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will discuss how a regional style of architecture and design emerged in California when the modernist sensibilities of European émigré architects, native designers, and migrants from other parts of the United States responded to California’s benevolent climate, informal lifestyle, and pervasive optimism.
