Being in the design world, here are a few of my favourite places in Milano...
La Triennale di Milano, viale Alemagna 6 The Triennale is the MoMA of Milano. It has a great new design collection area and a nice café as well for lunch or coffee. It is open on Sunday as well.
Studio Museum Achille Castiglioni, Piazza Castello 27 Across the street and very close is Studio Museo Achille Castiglioni. Achille is one of the great grand masters of Italian design and this is his personal studio. Often family members give the tour, and it is just an amazing space that is always inspirational and a must-see.
Massimo De Carlo Gallery. via Giovanni Ventura 5 In the art world there is Massimo De Carlo Gallery. Massimo is Maurizio Cattelan’s dealer, and represents many of the other big names. Additionally his gallery is right across the courtyard from Abitare.
I have not really had a bad meal in Italy, so one can’t go too wrong. Every day involves at least one or two coffees and when the sun is out I make sure I enjoy a gelato every now and again…
Radetjky. corso Garibaldi 105 For breakfast in NYC I have two “go to” places, Baltazhar and Gitane. In Milano my morning go to place is Radetjky. The best freshly squeezed orange juice and eggs I’ve had in the city.
Bagutta, via Bagutta 14 For lunch there are may great places in Milano, but my favorite is Bagutta, an old-world institution. A long standing association with the literary and art worlds, with mural covered walls, it has a wonderful patina and lived-in look that only comes with time. The waiters and staff are both real and characters at the same time. The food is very consistent which makes it one of my Milano “standards”. It's one of my favourite restaurants in the world.
Da Giacomo, via Pascale Sottocorno 6 For dinner my favorite place is the elegant and sophisticated Da Giacomo. I usually go for seafood, but everything on the menu is absolutely great. Living in NYC, I like to feel that I am having a meal somewhere that represents the culture of where I am and Da Giacomo does that so well. The room is very special and it truly represents Milano.
Central Milano – San Babila and Duomo area. A walk down via Spiga and up via Montenapoleone just sets the tone for Italian fashion and culture in a way that is right out of a movie, particularly via Spiga.
G. Lorenzi, via Montenapoleone 9 I have always been fascinated by tools, utensils and little useful things. G. Lorenzi is the best men’s store in Italy for sure, and maybe the world. Be sure to go downstairs.
Aspesi, via Monte Napoleone 13 Via Montenapoleone is my “go to” store for work and causal clothes, Aspesi. I’m lucky working in a creative field because I can wear pretty much anything, but for me, it has to be something interesting and/or special. Aspesi’s palette and choice of materials means the colour range is very sophisticated, and the clothes always travel very well. Given that I travel at least 100k miles a year, and have done that for the last 15+ years, getting off a plane looking professional is pretty important.
Corso Como, Corso Como 10 Heading a little north is one of the best fashion and lifestyle stores in the world. 10 Corso Como also has two nice galleries that have interesting shows, art, photography, etc, a great book & music store and a restaurant. The store is also open on Sundays.
Spazio Rossana Orlandi, via Matteo Bandello 14 Another very unique store to Milano is Spazio Rossana Orlandi (pictured) located in a wonderful old building in the Magenta District. Multiple rooms and floors provide a journey through old and new design objects and furniture. It's full of discovery and always worth visiting.
B&B Italia, via Durini 14 My list would not be complete without a stop by the flagship B&B Italia store on via Durini. Antonio Citterio designed the store, and like most flagships no expense was spared in making it the best. It has the most complete presentation of the current collection and the brand as a whole.
